Barbell hip thrust

Barbell and bench

Primary muscles

Secondary muscles

The hip thrust loads hip extension hardest at the top, where the glutes are fully shortened. That makes it one of the most glute-focused exercises.

Form cues

  • Upper back on the bench edge
  • Chin tucked, ribs down
  • Lock out by squeezing the glutes, not arching the back
