Pull-up

Bar

Primary muscles

Secondary muscles

An overhand vertical pull. The lats and teres major pull the arms down, the lower traps and rhomboids control the shoulder blades, and the elbow flexors bend the arms.

Form cues

  • Start from a dead hang
  • Pull the elbows down to the ribs
  • Chin over the bar without craning the neck

What each muscle does in the pull-up

MuscleRoleAction
Latissimus dorsiPrimaryExtends, adducts and medially rotates the arm
Biceps brachiiSecondaryFlexes the elbow and supinates the forearm
BrachialisSecondaryFlexes the elbow in any forearm position
BrachioradialisSecondaryFlexes the elbow, especially with a neutral grip
Teres majorSecondaryExtends, adducts and medially rotates the arm
Lower trapeziusSecondaryDepresses and upwardly rotates the scapula
Middle trapeziusSecondaryRetracts the scapula (pulls the shoulder blades together)
RhomboidsSecondaryRetract, elevate and downwardly rotate the scapula
Posterior deltoidSecondaryExtends, horizontally abducts and laterally rotates the arm
InfraspinatusSecondaryLaterally rotates the arm and stabilises the shoulder joint
Teres minorSecondaryLaterally rotates the arm and stabilises the shoulder joint
Pectoralis majorSecondaryFlexes, adducts and medially rotates the arm
Forearm flexorsSecondaryFlex the wrist and fingers and provide grip strength; the pronator teres pronates the forearm

Primary muscles are the prime movers; secondary muscles assist or stabilise. The balance shifts with grip, stance, range of motion and technique.
