Adductor hallucis
Feet
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Oblique head: bases of metatarsals 2 to 4 and the sheath of the fibularis longus tendon; transverse head: ligaments of the joints at the bases of toes 3 to 5
- Insertion
- Outer side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the big toe
- Action
- Adducts the big toe and helps support the arch across the ball of the foot
- Nerve supply
- Deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve (S2–S3)
A two-headed muscle deep in the sole. The oblique head runs diagonally and the transverse head runs across the ball of the foot; together they pull the big toe toward the other toes.
