Adductor pollicis
Hands
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Oblique head: capitate and bases of the second and third metacarpals; transverse head: front of the third metacarpal
- Insertion
- Inner side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb
- Action
- Adducts the thumb (pulls it toward the palm)
- Nerve supply
- Deep branch of the ulnar nerve (C8–T1)
A fan-shaped, two-headed muscle deep in the web between the thumb and index finger. It presses the thumb against the side of the hand, powering key and pinch grips.
