Obturator internus
Hips & glutes
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Inner surface of the obturator membrane and the surrounding pelvic bone
- Insertion
- Medial surface of the greater trochanter
- Action
- Laterally rotates the hip and stabilises the joint
- Nerve supply
- Nerve to obturator internus (L5–S2)
It starts inside the pelvis, then its tendon turns sharply around the ischium to reach the femur, flanked by the two gemelli.
