Deep hip rotators

Origin
Sacrum, ischium and the obturator membrane
Insertion
Greater trochanter, trochanteric fossa and intertrochanteric crest of the femur
Action
Laterally rotate and stabilise the hip

Six small muscles under the gluteus maximus, including the piriformis. They hold the femoral head in the socket and turn the leg outward.
