Flexor hallucis longus
Lower legs
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Lower two-thirds of the back of the fibula and the interosseous membrane
- Insertion
- Base of the distal phalanx of the big toe
- Action
- Flexes the big toe; assists plantarflexion
- Nerve supply
- Tibial nerve (L5–S2)
The strongest of the deep calf muscles. It bends the big toe and helps push off from the ground in walking and running.
