Tibialis posterior

Lower legs

Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.

Origin
Back of the tibia and fibula and the interosseous membrane
Insertion
Navicular tuberosity, the cuneiforms, cuboid and bases of metatarsals 2 to 4
Action
Inverts the foot and plantarflexes the ankle; supports the arch
Nerve supply
Tibial nerve (L4–L5)

The deepest muscle on the back of the lower leg. Its tendon runs behind the inner ankle into the sole, where it helps hold up the arch of the foot.
