Lumbar intertransversarii

Back

Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.

Origin
Lateral set: transverse process of a lumbar vertebra; medial set: accessory process of a lumbar vertebra
Insertion
Lateral set: transverse process of the neighbouring vertebra; medial set: mammillary process of the vertebra below
Action
Bend the lumbar spine to the same side and help stabilise it
Nerve supply
Ventral rami (lateral set) and dorsal rami (medial set) of the lumbar spinal nerves

Small paired muscles at the side of the lower back linking each lumbar vertebra to the next. There are two sets: a lateral one between the transverse processes and a medial one just behind it.
