Rotatores
Back
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Transverse process of a vertebra
- Insertion
- Lamina and base of the spinous process of the vertebra one or two levels above
- Action
- Rotate the spine to the opposite side and help extend it
- Nerve supply
- Dorsal rami of the spinal nerves
The deepest and shortest layer of back muscles, each linking one vertebra to the next, under the multifidus. They are best developed in the thoracic spine, with smaller ones in the neck and lower back.
