Obliquus capitis inferior
Inferior oblique of the head · Neck
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Spinous process of the axis (C2)
- Insertion
- Transverse process of the atlas (C1)
- Action
- Turns the head to the same side by rotating the atlas on the axis
- Nerve supply
- Suboccipital nerve (C1)
The largest suboccipital muscle and, despite its name, the only one not attached to the skull. It turns the head by rotating the first vertebra around the second.
