Thyrohyoid
Neck
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Oblique line of the thyroid cartilage
- Insertion
- Lower border of the body and greater horn of the hyoid bone
- Action
- Lowers the hyoid bone, or raises the larynx when the hyoid is held fixed
- Nerve supply
- First cervical nerve via the hypoglossal nerve (C1)
A short strap muscle continuing upward from the sternothyroid. It draws the larynx and hyoid together, which helps in swallowing.
