Scalenus medius
Middle scalene · Neck
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Back tubercles of the transverse processes of C2 to C7
- Insertion
- Upper surface of the first rib, behind the groove for the subclavian artery
- Action
- Raises the first rib; bends the neck to the same side
- Nerve supply
- Anterior rami of the cervical spinal nerves (C3–C8)
The largest and longest of the three scalenes. It lifts the first rib in deep breathing and bends the neck sideways.
