Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.

- Back tubercle of the atlas (C1)
- Insertion
- Inner part of the inferior nuchal line of the occipital bone
- Action
- Extends the head
- Nerve supply
- Suboccipital nerve (C1)
The smallest suboccipital muscle, lying next to the midline between the first vertebra and the skull. It tilts the head back.
