Splenius cervicis
Neck
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Spinous processes of T3 to T6
- Insertion
- Transverse processes of the upper two or three neck vertebrae
- Action
- Extends the neck; alone, bends and turns it to the same side
- Nerve supply
- Dorsal rami of the lower cervical spinal nerves
The lower, narrower part of the splenius, running from the upper back to the top of the neck. It works with the splenius capitis to extend and turn the neck.
