Scalenus anterior
Anterior scalene · Neck
Deep muscle — it lies under other muscles. X-ray makes the muscles over it see-through.
- Origin
- Front tubercles of the transverse processes of C3 to C6
- Insertion
- Scalene tubercle of the first rib
- Action
- Raises the first rib; bends the neck forward and to the same side
- Nerve supply
- Anterior rami of the cervical spinal nerves (C4–C6)
The front scalene, lying under the sternocleidomastoid at the side of the neck. It bends the neck and lifts the first rib in deep breathing; the nerves to the arm pass between it and the scalenus medius.
